Chakra meditation is a meditative practice rooted in ancient Indian spiritual traditions, particularly within Hinduism, and later adopted by other spiritual and holistic traditions. According to these traditions, “chakra” refers to energy centres in the subtle body. Seven main chakras are aligned along the spinal cord, each associated with specific physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects.
Whether the chakras are overactive or underactive, it leads to imbalance. An imbalance in the seven chakras affects various aspects of an individual’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Addressing chakra imbalances involves holistic practices such as meditation, yoga, energy healing, and other mindful techniques. These wellness practices aim to restore balance and harmony to the energetic system, promoting overall well-being. It’s essential to approach these concepts with an open mind and
consider them complementary rather than substitutes for conventional medical care when needed.
Seven chakras:
1) Root Chakra (Muladhara): (Red)
It is located at the base of the spine and is associated with grounding, survival instincts, and basic needs.
The imbalance creates anxiety, restlessness, aggression, excessive attachment to material possessions, lack of energy, feelings of being disconnected from reality, and difficulty manifesting goals. The possible physical issues include problems with the lower spine, legs, feet, and immune system.
2) Sacral Chakra (Swadhisthana): (Orange)
It is located in the lower abdomen below the belly button (navel) and is linked to emotions, creativity, and sexual energy.
The imbalance brings overindulgence in pleasure-seeking, emotional volatility, lack of boundaries, lack of passion, creativity, and emotional numbness. The possible physical issues include reproductive and sexual organ disorders, urinary issues, and lower back pain.
3) Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura): (Yellow)
It is found in the upper abdomen under the breast bones and above the navel and is associated with personal power, confidence, and self-esteem. The imbalance leads to control issues, aggression, dominance, perfectionism, low self- esteem, lack of confidence, and feelings of powerlessness. The possible physical issues include digestive problems, liver and pancreas issues, and adrenal gland
disorders.
4) Heart Chakra (Anahata): (Green)
It is at the centre of the chest and governs love, compassion, and emotional well-being. The imbalance leads to over-empathy, co-dependency, difficulties setting boundaries, lack of compassion, fear of intimacy, and emotional coldness. The possible physical issues include heart and circulatory system issues, respiratory problems, and immune system disorders.
5) Throat Chakra (Vishuddha): (Blue)
It is situated at the throat and is linked to communication, self-expression, and truth. Imbalance leads to over-communication, talking without listening, arrogance, difficulty expressing thoughts and emotions, and fear of speaking up. The possible physical issues include thyroid and throat issues, neck and shoulder pain, and communication related problems.
6) Third Eye Chakra (Ajna): (Indigo)
It is positioned between the eyebrows and is associated with intuition, perception, and spiritual awareness. The imbalance leads to an overactive imagination, detachment from reality, difficulty focusing, lack of intuition, difficulty making decisions, and feeling disconnected from inner wisdom. The possible physical issues include headaches, eye problems and neurological disorders.
7) Crown Chakra (Sahasrara): (Purple/ White)
It is at the top of the head and represents the connection to higher consciousness,
wisdom, and spiritual enlightenment.
The imbalance creates spiritual elitism, disconnection from the body, impracticality, lack
of spiritual connection, close-mindedness, and materialism. The possible physical
Issues are disorders of the central nervous system, mental health issues, and general
imbalances in the body.
Chakra meditation involves focusing on each chakra, often starting from the root and moving upward, while bringing awareness to the associated qualities and energy. The goal is to balance and align the energy flow within these centres, promoting physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Chakra meditation is commonly practised in yoga, mindfulness, and holistic healing approaches. Maintaining a harmonious flow of energy through the chakras is believed to contribute to overall health and inner balance.
